Organizing a quiz or trivia night can be daunting task. The first time is always the hardest though, once you have successfully organized a couple of quiz nights it will be smooth sailing. There are some useful tips and tricks that it's worth knowing from the start though.

Firstly, if you've never run a quiz or trivia night before make sure you do a trial run with friends and family. Pretend it's the real quiz night and pay close attention to any problems that crop up. It will be tempting to joke around and not take the trial quiz seriously. It will be to your advantage to take it as seriously as possible and pretend that there are fifty strangers involved not just a couple of friends and family members.

This trial run will soon show you where your process is falling down. Did it take too long to work out the scores? Were you asking the questions too quickly? What type of questions did people like and dislike? A trial run can help a great deal.

For the night itself make sure you get a couple more helpers than you think you will need. The more teams participating the more scorers and helpers you need. You may have someone assigned to read out the questions and someone else assigned to score the answer sheets and create a leader board.

On the night unexpected things will come up. Perhaps someone will need to dash out of the room to fetch something, maybe one of your helpers will be called away for family reasons. Making sure there are a couple of extra people assigned as helpers can be a life saver.

Running a quiz night is little bit of a performance, you are presenting and organizing a large group. Even if there are problems or you are confused, stay calm and make decisions and people will be supportive.

Think about preparing some extra trivia questions to use as tie breakers. The Young Teacher's Guide To Using The Quiz As A Teaching Strategy

In recent years, there has been much discussion in the outside community that students are leaving school with less knowledge than their parents. There have been calls to return to the old ways of teaching which would include the use of a class quiz from time to time. However, what parents and others have forgotten is that, right from primary school, students are now exposed to a greater number of learning areas than the old 'Three Rs'.

Consequently, the students have less time on the traditional subjects than was the case in years gone by. Thus, we teachers still need to look for efficient ways to ensure students get all the necessary essential learning so that they are ready to enter the real world at school's end.

Syllabus writers have tried to counter this loss of subject time by reducing content and therefore encouraging teachers to concentrate on teaching for understanding rather than for a body of facts. However, there is still, as ever, a need for students to know basic facts on which to build their learning and to have an understanding of the language of the subject area they study. In my early career, after a year teaching in a primary school, I taught a variety of high school subjects in Years Eight to Ten including Maths, Science, English, History and Geography. These gave me many opportunities to use the quiz as a teaching strategy. What it also taught me is that the quiz is an effective teaching and learning tool across all subject areas from lower primary school classes up to junior high school.

First, decide on someone who will be the 'quiz master' or game leader. The quiz master can use already-created questions from trivia games such as Trivial Pursuit or he can create his own questions and look up the answers in reliable sources.

Once all of the trivia questions are created, you and your friends are ready for a great quiz night. The players can be divided into teams or play individually. This depends on how many players there are, but usually, three to five teams works best. Each team is given a sheet of paper. The team is responsible for labeling the round number and the question number. The leader begins by announcing the first category, which will consist of the questions for round #1. They must read the quiz questions slowly and clearly and is allowed to repeat the question once if asked by one of the players. They should always be clear what the number of the question is so each team can write the answer next to the corresponding number.

After all the rounds have been completed, the leader collects all of the answer cards and adds up the number of correct answers. The team with the most correct answers wins! If there is a tie, the leader can create a 'sudden death' round, in which the teams with the same number of points go head-to-head to answer questions (on any topic). Learning should be fun. Likewise making a quiz should be easy and fun. Have you ever tried building an exam in word and became frustrated trying to format the exam paper? In education or business multiple choice exams are probably the most common test format. It offers simplicity for both examiners and quiz takers. Creating a multiple choice test need not be complicated. By following the guidelines below you should have no problem creating a basic multiple choice exam. The good news is that once you have created one multiple choice exam, you have now become an expert.

Questions you should ask yourself before building the exam

1. Will some questions contain multiple answers?

If this is true after each question state the number of answers the quiz taker needs to mark e.g. "mark 2 answers" otherwise display at the top of the first page "Every question requires only ONE answer". This will save pages when printing tests with a large number of questions.

2. Will some exam questions contain images?

Moving images may throw everything out of format so if images are required ensure they do not need to be moved at a later stage. Images must be clearly displayed with no loss of quality. I recommend printing in high quality and if necessary in colour.

3. Will some exam answers contain images?

Same as above ensure the exam taker can clearly see and mark the correct image answers.

Building your exam

Pub Quiz - 5 Formats That General Knowledge Quiz Goers Always Enjoy

Creating a pub quiz needs to have a lot of thought put it. Difficulty level, topics, and the amount of quiz rounds are all important parts to a quiz.
